CHAPTER 7
Clay hesitated outside Markiâs door. Normally, he started his day early. Heâd already put in two hours of work before he knocked on her door the day before. Now Marki had signed up for his regular schedule.
He took a breath. She had volunteered, which had been incredibly sweet of her. Honestly, heâd been grateful when she offered to cut her lessons short. He didnât want her to leave and he would have found a way to make it work, but knowing that she was willing to sacrifice for a family sheâd just met spoke volumes about her character. He wondered how much about her offer was true. She hadnât spoken much about the role other than to say it was a dream role. Clay hoped heâd have a chance to ask her about it.
He rapped on the door, and a wide-awake voice called, âItâs open.â He entered to find Marki up, dressed, and standing beside the coffee maker. âIâm ready to go,â she said, setting down her mug. âThereâs one small problem.â
âWhat is it?â Because she looked fine.
âThere is no way Iâm going to be able to get on a horse this morning. I donât care how nice Popcorn is. I literally donât have the flexibility, and Iâve already done thirty minutes of yoga. I might be able to this afternoon when Iâve loosened up a bit, but right now, it would be a waste of our time. Iâm good to work, though. Marjorie said I was supposed to feed the chickens first. Show me the way?â
She had immaculate posture as she walked to the door. Her short, mincing steps made it clear, though, that standing straight was all she could do. Clay felt bad for her, but the only way to move forward with her lessons was to push through the sore muscles. There were no shortcuts.
He could offer some incentive, though. âWe donât have any kind of hot tub for our guests,â he started.
âI noticed. I was going to recommend that. New riders are going to need one.â She put her hands on her hips and leaned back slightly.
âItâs already on the list. But until then, youâre welcome to use the bathtub at the house. It will really help.â He was a shower guy himself, but every once in a while, especially after a long day, he wasnât above a soak to soothe his aching muscles.
âThat is the nicest thing anybodyâs ever said to me, and Iâve been nominated for an Emmy,â Marki said with a laugh. âIâll look forward to that all day.â
âThen letâs get started. The sooner you begin, the closer youâll be to that bath.â
He left Marki with his mother outside the chicken coop. He heard a few squawks that may not have come from the chickens, but he saw her half an hour later when she entered the barn wearing a pair of Shannonâs rubber boots. His mother had provided her with a pair of new leather gloves from the storeroom.
âThis is the stinky part,â he warned her.
